Mechanical, Resin & Fillers:
The majority of commercial purging compounds both past and present rely on the introduction of stiffer materials which force the residual elements from the machine. The composites and pricing of mechanical purging products vary widely from home brews to commercial grades. Mechanical purging is generally viewed as inexpensive and operator friendly. Although they can be effective in a variety of purging applications, they can also have limitations in the quality of cleaning, time required , and volume of purging material needed to clean the machine. Degrees of abrasiveness in mechanical purges very greatly and depending on the composition, some materials can have limited function in various types of plastic processing machinery.
Chemical; Liquids:
Numerous forms of liquids from just adding water to resin to commercial liquid products have also been been used over the years in purging applications. Mixing of commercial purging liquids with regrind resin is a strong marketing platform for this type of product. It can be considered inconvenient and/or too complicated for some thermoplastic processors; care must be given to proper mix ratios to avoid numerous problematic potentials. There are many cases where regrind has more value being processed back into production vs. the cost of using it for purging. Due to the non-mechanical aspects of liquid purging chemicals; purging may have variations in the amount of purging material mixture required and the extent of effectiveness in cleaning the machine.
Chemical; Solids:
There are many forms of chemicals in a solid base used by the thermoplastic industry. The adding of chemical based solids to plastic has resulted in numerous advancements in resin technology. This stands to reason with plastic being a solid material with a chemically based composition. Chemical solids can also play a role in purging methodologies by providing dual purging benefits; chemical cleaning and mechanical scrubbing.
RapidPurge provides dual purpose purging methodology by providing two of the most effective, non-toxic, cleaning chemistries. Under heat, RapidPurge releases a chemical reaction that produces short-lived intermediates which break the polymer chain in melted thermoplastic resulting in a lower molecular weight and reduction in melt viscosity. This chemical reaction expands into negative flow areas penetrating residual plastics and softening contaminates that adhere to metallic surfaces. This chemical reaction combined with the non-abrasive mechanical components provide a soft scrubbing action that loosens and allows residual materials to be effectively purged from the machine.
